Monte Soro

Our adventure begins with a pleasant excursion through the enchanting Sollazzo Verde Beech Forest, leading us to the discovery of the majestic Monte Soro — the highest peak in the Nebrodi Park at 1,847 meters above sea level. The route begins with an uphill stretch from Portella Calacudera, taking us through breathtaking scenery to reach the Acerone di Monte Soro — an impressive maple tree approximately 25 meters tall. This monumental tree, estimated to be around 500 years old, is among the largest maple trees in Italy and is a true giant of nature. Continuing onwards, we reach the summit of Monte Soro, from where we can admire spectacular panoramas spanning the entire park, making the excursion an unforgettable experience.

Lago Maulazzo

We continue our excursion by immersing ourselves in the Sollazzo Verde beech forests inside the Nebrodi Park, following enchanting trails that allow us to enjoy a unique atmosphere. The route begins at Portella Femmina Morta, at an altitude of 1,524 meters above sea level, and develops along a dirt track winding through the dense beech forest. This trail leads us to Lago Maulazzo, situated at 1,444 meters above sea level. This artificial lake, surrounded by lush vegetation, has become an area of great naturalistic and scientific importance. The surrounding environment and the tranquility of the setting make this excursion a rejuvenating experience for body and mind — ideal for nature and trekking enthusiasts.

Monte Soro and Lago Maulazzo are two of the most precious gems of the Nebrodi Park — a protected area covering approximately 86,000 hectares in Sicily, characterized by extraordinary biodiversity. In addition to the spectacular panoramas and lush vegetation, the area is home to a rich fauna including the golden eagle, the wildcat, and numerous species of birds and mammals. During winter periods with snow, it is also possible to do the excursion on snowshoes and reach the frozen lake. The excursion offers not only a trekking experience, but also the opportunity to immerse yourself in the natural and cultural history of this fascinating region.
