Departing from Contrada Pasci, the route crosses the majestic Rocca Calanna cliff — a site renowned for golden eagle nesting — and continues along a rocky amphitheater of extraordinary beauty, rich in varied cliff flora and fauna. This path leads to the Grotta del Lauro, a spectacular karst cavity located on the slopes of the Rocche del Crasto, in the territory of Alcara Li Fusi.
The Grotta del Lauro, with its entrance situated midway up the Rocca del Crasto at approximately 1,100 meters above sea level, offers excursionists the opportunity to explore extraordinary karst formations. Inside, you can admire stalactites, stalagmites, and other carbonate concretions formed over millennia by the action of water. The cave is characterized by several beautiful chambers from which numerous tunnels branch off, shaped by the incessant flow of underground water.
In addition to its speleological value, the Grotta del Lauro is also of significant archaeological importance, having likely been the site of a human settlement dating back to the Bronze Age. This makes a visit to the cave not only an extraordinary nature experience, but also a journey through time in search of the traces left by our ancestors.
Exploring the Zafarana Forest and its surroundings means immersing yourself in a natural environment of incomparable beauty, where every corner tells an ancient and precious story. The variety of flora and fauna, the archaeological significance, and the majesty of the natural formations make this excursion a unique and unforgettable experience. It is important to dress appropriately, wearing hiking or sports shoes and a long-sleeved jacket. Bringing water is also recommended.
