The Montagnareale – Monte Ilici and Rocca Saracena excursion begins by following a small stream and crossing a forest rich in poplars and alders, creating a cool and relaxing environment. The trail leads to the “Acqua Usignolo” spring — an enchanting spot ideal for a short rest and refreshment. Continuing along the path, we head towards Monte Ilici, one of the highest peaks in the area, approaching 1,000 meters in altitude. From here, you can enjoy a magnificent 360-degree panorama embracing the surrounding mountains and the landscape below.
The route continues towards the Rocca Saracena Refuge, where a packed lunch break awaits. This pause allows you to rest in a welcoming environment. After lunch, the descent begins through majestic forests of chestnut trees, hazel trees, and oaks, offering an evocative and relaxing atmosphere. The descent brings us to Contrada Fiumara and finally to the village of Montagnareale, where — in addition to discovering the local beauty and history — a visit to the distinctive Mulino di Capo is recommended: a horizontal waterwheel mill still in operation, offering a fascinating testament to ancient grain-milling techniques.
