The excursion along the “Le Gurne dell’Alcantara” trail is a fascinating nature walk organized by the Alcantara River Park authority. The route, predominantly flat and straightforward, offers the opportunity to admire a variety of natural wonders. You will observe a majestic downy oak, lichens on lava rock faces, and grey herons in flight.
After crossing a small oak grove, you reach a footbridge near the Enel water intake, from which there is an enchanting view of the Gurne. These small pools are formed by water erosion on lava rock and are surrounded by lush flora composed of poplars, downy oaks, willows, and oleanders. The loop trail ends with a gentle climb along the hillside that hosts the castle of Francavilla di Sicilia. At the top, you will find a viewpoint offering a splendid view of the confluence of the Zavianni river with the Alcantara, the town of Francavilla, and the 16th-century Capuchin convent.
At the end of the excursion, a visit to the Alcantara Gorges is included (entrance fee included). In the deepest part of the gorges — carved by the river to a depth of approximately 30 meters — you can admire the basaltic formations and wade through the river, refreshing yourself in its cool waters. The Gurne dell’Alcantara and the River Park offer a unique experience, combining natural beauty with the history and culture of the region, making this excursion unmissable for nature and discovery lovers.
